Decks & outdoor living

A Deck That’s Still Beautiful in Twenty Years

A well-built deck extends your living space outdoors and becomes one of the most used areas of your home from spring through autumn. At Mighton Construction, we build exclusively with composite and PVC decking — products engineered to withstand South Georgian Bay’s demanding conditions while requiring virtually no ongoing maintenance.

Heavy snow loads, freeze-thaw cycles, intense summer UV, and lake-effect moisture punish wood decks here. We build for that reality, so your deck is still beautiful and solid twenty years from now.

What we build

Outdoor Living Built for Georgian Bay

From spacious entertaining platforms to multi-level designs for sloped lots and waterfront decks detailed for exposure, we build the full range of outdoor living — all in premium composite and PVC, with coordinated railings, lighting, and privacy features.

  • Entertaining decks — spacious platforms with dining and lounging zones, integrated seating, and railing-mounted lighting
  • Multi-level decks — designed for the sloped properties common around Blue Mountain, the Escarpment, and Georgian Bay shorelines
  • Waterfront decks — PVC decking for maximum moisture resistance, with conservation setbacks and shoreline rules handled
  • Wraparound decks — outdoor living extended around multiple sides of the home, with continuous railings and clean transitions
  • Covered & screened areas — protection from insects and weather while keeping the outdoor feel, usable spring through fall
  • Stairs, railings & lighting — composite and aluminium railings, LED stair and post-cap lighting, privacy screens, and benches

Composite vs PVC vs wood

Why We Build Only in Composite and PVC

We have seen what this climate does to wood decks: splitting boards, popped fasteners, and annual staining that never quite keeps up. Composite blends wood fibre and polymer under a protective cap; PVC is 100% synthetic and shrugs off moisture entirely. Both outlast several generations of wood — and neither ever needs stain or sealant.

  • Composite — $80–$150+ per sq ft, premium capped boards from TimberTech, Trex, and Fiberon
  • PVC — $100–$180+ per sq ft, the top choice for waterfront and heavily shaded properties
  • Warranties — 25–50 years on premium product lines
  • Maintenance — an occasional wash. That’s it.

Built for our climate

Engineered for Snow, Sun, and Freeze-Thaw

A deck here spends months under snow and the rest of the year in intense UV, so we build for both. Every deck starts with footings engineered for our frost depth and framing that exceeds minimum code to carry our snow loads, with drainage, ventilation, and flashing detailed properly.

  • Footings below frost — engineered for our frost depth, so nothing heaves or shifts with the seasons
  • Framing beyond code — structural framing that exceeds minimum requirements to carry our snow loads
  • Permits handled — attached, elevated, and larger decks need permits in most local municipalities, and we manage the process for every deck we build

Why Mighton

Deck Builders Who Sweat the Structure

The decking surface gets the attention, but the structure underneath determines whether your deck is still solid in twenty years. Jeff and Adam Mighton apply the same construction standards to a deck as to a custom home — proper footings, over-built framing, flashing detailed against water intrusion, and manufacturer fastening specs followed to the letter.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you recommend composite and PVC over pressure-treated wood?
South Georgian Bay's climate is exceptionally hard on wood decks. Heavy snow loads, freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure, and moisture cause pressure-treated lumber to warp, split, crack, and deteriorate within a few years. Composite and PVC decking resists these conditions, requires virtually no maintenance, and looks better for decades.
What is the difference between composite and PVC decking?
Composite decking is made from a blend of wood fibres and plastic. PVC decking is 100% synthetic with no wood content. PVC is more resistant to moisture, staining, and mould, making it ideal for waterfront properties and areas with heavy shade. PVC is typically more expensive but offers the highest durability.
How long will a composite or PVC deck last?
Quality composite and PVC decking comes with manufacturer warranties of 25–50 years. With proper installation and minimal maintenance (occasional cleaning), these decks will outlast multiple generations of wood decks.
Do I need a permit for a deck?
In most cases, yes. Decks attached to a home, elevated decks, and decks over a certain size require building permits in South Georgian Bay municipalities. We handle the permit process for every deck we build.
Can you build a deck on a sloped lot?
Yes. Many properties in the Blue Mountain and Georgian Bay shoreline areas have significant grade changes. We design and engineer elevated deck structures, multi-level decks, and stepped designs that work with the terrain rather than against it.
Can the deck support a hot tub?
Yes, with engineering. A filled hot tub concentrates thousands of kilograms on a small footprint, so we design the framing and footings for the load from the start. Tell us during design — reinforcing later costs far more than planning for it now.
Do you build wood decks?
We build exclusively in composite and PVC. After years of watching South Georgian Bay winters destroy pressure-treated decks — splitting boards, popped fasteners, annual staining — we would rather build you a deck that still looks new in fifteen years than one you maintain every spring.
Can you build a deck in the off-season?
Often, yes. Footings need workable ground, but late-fall and early-spring builds are common and get you to the front of the queue for the season. Booking in winter for a spring build is the surest way to be grilling by the May long weekend.
What railing options do you offer?
Coordinated composite and aluminium systems, glass panels where a view deserves protecting, and privacy screens where neighbours are close. Railings are also where lighting lives — post-cap and stair lights extend the deck deep into summer evenings.
How does your open-book, cost-plus pricing work?
You pay the actual cost of materials, labour, and subcontractors, plus a clearly defined management fee — and you see every invoice along the way. There are no hidden markups or padded allowances. It keeps our interests aligned with yours: we have no incentive to cut corners, because we do not profit from the difference.
Do you handle building permits and inspections?
Yes. Depending on the project scope, we coordinate or fully manage permits with the municipality, arrange required inspections, and handle conservation authority applications where properties in South Georgian Bay need them. Every project we build is permitted and inspected.
Can you work from plans we already have?
Absolutely. We regularly price and build from completed architectural drawings. If you are earlier in the process, we can also coordinate design and pre-construction planning with architects, designers, and engineers we trust.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Mighton Construction Limited carries $5 million in aggregate liability coverage and maintains WSIB coverage for applicable work, with clearance information available on request. All work is built to Ontario Building Code and inspected by the local building department.
What happens after I submit the contact form?
We aim to respond to serious project enquiries within 1–2 business days. The first step is a free phone conversation about your goals, timing, location, and rough budget. If the project is a good fit, we arrange a site visit and provide early guidance and a ballpark estimate.
How far in advance should we get in touch?
Earlier than you think. We intentionally take on a limited number of projects each year so Jeff and Adam stay personally involved in every one — which means our calendar fills ahead of the season. Talking early also gives design, permits, and material lead times the room they need.
